What is compounding?

Compounding is the traditional pharmacy practice of preparing customised medications for individual patients. Its origins date back to the beginning of pharmacy. With the advent of large-scale drug manufacturing from the 1950s, the pharmacist’s role began to focus on dispensing rather than medication preparation. However, compounding is now experiencing a resurgence because some patients require, or desire, alternatives to standard medications.
